Now for Wrath... Now for Ruin... and the Red Dawn...
This week was the escalation of the CopyBot Incident @ Second Life. Second life officials came out to ban the use of the tool, which was created by a group of coders who were trying to create further hacks for the Linden labs based on their Open Source codes. The issue has been addressed by Virtual word scholars all over. And The one thing that the Wang loves the most, is that this breaking news is being covered and reported by SL journalist, and second life Reuters; a true sign that the virtual world is an existing information system and that its own citizens are now dealing with an moral issue regarding copyright issues and the ownership of virtual properties.
Originally Linden labs had no intentions of shutting down Copybot, basing an argument on that copying is not always illegal. But later content providers created the largest SL protest by shutting down stores and venues. Later, ppl even created virtual signs and picketing aginst those who sold the CopyBot program in the SL world.
Though the Wang has a soft spot for the content creators of SL, the Wang brother being one of them, the Wang watches this issue like a like the average male watches the 14th week of the NFL season while his fantasy football team’s website is up in Yahoo. This is ground breaking moments for both the issues of Copyright and virtual Worlds. Linden labs new position will in fact solidify the ownership of virtual properties, and the copy rights entitle to it. Though this isn’t laid down in virtual law yet, but a decision like this can be considered precedence in the eyes of, perhaps future virtual courts. Linden has settle the current issue by promising future enhancement that would grantee content creators more copyright controls. And thus begins the slippery slope of copyright issues, now even existing in our virtual worlds.
Biggest coverage here by SL Journalist, Wagner James Au.
